Open Herritage

Map the Moment

When businesses boarded up in the spring of 2020 many protesters and artists embraced the blank slates to share their points of view.

As the boards began to come down, we captured some locations in the mission district of San Francisco in June 2020 as part of Cyark‘s Map the Moment project. Cyark used our photosets, and sets donated from around the country to calculate models that captured a point in history on a national scale.

The data sets are available for download on Open Herritage 3D.

Balmy Alley Garage

These two panels from Balmy Alley are a test of large-scale models using normal maps for detail on a low poly-count model. This original model was a modest 400,000, but the lo-poly is 40,000.

This is just one garage with two murals in an alley filled with murals (in a neighborhood filled with murals).

Find out more about the alley and it’s artwork:

plaster cherub

The physical model is a cast plaster cherub that was found sitting on a street light in the early 90’s. The plaster is pink, and has faded un-evenly over the years.

The model was calculated from 219 photographs taken in a diffuse light box.

Bernal

Locations around Bernal Heights

Photogrammetry models and HDRI light probes of locations around Bernal Heights, San Francisco, were created for use in Unreal Engine Online Learning courses.

The environment models are used for plate line-ups, character and prop placement, reflections, and shadow catching. The HDRI are used for lighting assets to be composited int he filmed plates.
